Ammonia Refrigeration SWMS

Ammonia refrigeration systems are widespread in food processing facilities including meat processing plants, dairy facilities, cold storage warehouses, and beverage manufacturing. Ammonia is acutely toxic — concentrations above 300 ppm are immediately dangerous to life and health, and even low-level leaks at 25 ppm cause eye and respiratory tract irritation. Major ammonia releases have caused fatalities and mass evacuations at food processing facilities worldwide. The WHS Regulation 2025 requires comprehensive emergency planning for facilities with ammonia refrigeration systems above threshold quantities. Controls (Hierarchy of Controls)

Install continuous ammonia gas detection with audible and visual alarms at 25 ppm and 50 ppm set points
Maintain an ammonia emergency response plan including evacuation routes, assembly points, and notification procedures
Provide self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical splash suits for emergency response personnel
Conduct ammonia leak emergency drills at least annually with all workers
Implement a planned maintenance program for all ammonia system components including valves, seals, and relief devices
Install emergency ventilation systems in ammonia machine rooms with manual and automatic activation
Restrict access to ammonia machine rooms to authorised and trained personnel only
Display ammonia Safety Data Sheets and emergency procedures at all entry points to ammonia areas
