Silica dust, wet concrete chemical burns, and heavy plant hazards demand comprehensive WHS controls.
Concrete products manufacturing produces precast panels, pipes, blocks, pavers, and specialty concrete elements through batching, mixing, casting, curing, and finishing operations. Respirable crystalline silica exposure during raw material handling, cutting, grinding, and polishing concrete products is the primary chronic health hazard. Wet concrete at pH 13 causes alkaline chemical burns on prolonged skin contact. Heavy plant including overhead cranes, forklifts, and mould handling equipment creates crush and strike hazards. Noise from batching plants, vibrating tables, and concrete cutting frequently exceeds 85 dB(A). The incoming silica WEL reduction to 0.025 mg/m³ will require upgraded dust extraction and RPE programs across the sector.
